Seychelles President Patrick Herminie arrived in India on February 8, 2026, for a five-day official visit. The visit takes place during a special milestone as it marks the 50th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles. This historic occasion emphasizes the importance of the longstanding relationship between the two countries.
Upon arrival in India, President Herminie was received at Indira Gandhi International Airport by Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel. Before coming to Delhi, the president engaged with stakeholders in two Indian coastal cities, Chennai and Mumbai. These meetings focused on various sectors such as governance, industry, coastal management, and health. These discussions aimed to explore ways to enhance cooperation in these key areas.
During his stay in India, President Herminie is scheduled to meet India’s President Droupadi Murmu and have discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The talks will cover bilateral issues—those directly affecting both nations—as well as regional and international topics. The meetings are expected to strengthen the partnership and collaboration between India and Seychelles.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met with President Herminie. Their conversation highlighted the importance of advancing a regional cooperation plan called Vision MAHASAGAR. This initiative is aimed at promoting economic prosperity and regional security, showing India’s ongoing interest in supporting Seychelles and surrounding nations.
In addition to the official meetings, President Herminie extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi to serve as the Guest of Honour at Seychelles’ upcoming 50th Independence Day celebration. This invitation underscores the close ties and mutual respect shared by the two countries.
An important highlight of the visit was the announcement of a special economic package worth 175 million US dollars. This financial support is meant to back various projects in Seychelles. These projects include social housing, electric mobility (e-mobility), vocational training, healthcare, defense, and maritime security. The package aims to help Seychelles develop its infrastructure and improve living standards for its citizens.
During his visit, President Herminie paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, the memorial dedicated to Gandhi in New Delhi. This gesture symbolizes respect for India’s independence hero and the shared values between the nations.
The visit reflects the deep and broad relationship India and Seychelles share. Their cooperation spans many areas, from politics and security to economic development and cultural exchanges. Both countries see their partnership as vital for regional stability and progress.
