On February 4, 2026, Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor experienced an accident while inside the Parliament complex. He tripped on the stairs, which resulted in a hairline fracture of his foot. This type of fracture is a small break in the bone, which typically requires rest and proper medical care.
Tharoor had an X-ray, a common medical test used to see inside the body. The X-ray confirmed that he had a fracture in his foot. Despite this injury, Tharoor showed strength and determination. He continued his work in Parliament and attended the House in a wheelchair, a type of chair on wheels used by people who have difficulty walking.
Tharoor stated that he plans to continue his work and attend upcoming committee meetings. Although he is injured, he intends to participate actively, using a wheelchair for mobility. He made a light-hearted remark, saying, "Lagne do nazar," which means he is staying positive despite his fall and injury.
His office confirmed his injury and emphasized that he would keep working as much as possible. They mentioned that he might continue to use a wheelchair for some time, but he remains committed to his parliamentary duties and other engagements.
The incident was witnessed by other Members of Parliament, including Akhilesh Yadav, a prominent political leader. They quickly helped Tharoor after he fell, showing that support from colleagues is important in such moments.
The fall attracted attention and raised awareness about safety in the Parliament building. A neurologist, Dr. Sudhir Kumar, commented on the incident. He advised people to avoid using their phones while walking on stairs, as distractions can lead to accidents like this. His advice aimed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
On the day after the fall, Tharoor expressed his support for leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi. He remarked that objections to Gandhi's remarks had created a larger issue in Parliament, highlighting ongoing political challenges.
Tharoor's son, Ishaan Tharoor, recently faced job changes, as he was laid off from a newspaper in the United States due to restructuring. This personal detail was shared alongside the news of Tharoor’s injury, showing the broader context of challenges faced by the family.
Following the incident, Tharoor's office expressed gratitude for the well-wishes received from the public and colleagues. Despite the injury, Tharoor remains optimistic and committed to his work.
This event underscores the importance of safety in Parliament buildings and raises awareness of the need for caution while moving around stairs.
