The Indian Navy's sail training ship, INS Sudarshini, arrived at Salalah in Oman on February 2, 2026. This was the first international port call during her current transoceanic journey, named Lokayan 26. The voyage is part of a ten-month journey designed to include training for Indian Navy cadets and to build maritime goodwill between India and other nations.
INS Sudarshini set sail from the Naval Base in Kochi on January 20, 2026. The ship was built in Goa and is designed by a UK naval architect. It is part of a larger effort to enhance sailing skills and promote international naval cooperation.
The port visit lasted for three days and included various activities focused on strengthening ties with Oman. During her stay, Indian Navy officers engaged in professional interactions and training sessions with members of the Royal Navy of Oman. These engagements are important for sharing knowledge and developing cooperation between the two navies.
The ship also welcomed over 600 visitors during her stay in Salalah. The visitors included schoolchildren and members of the local community, helping to promote awareness about maritime activities. Hundreds of visitors had the chance to see the ship up close and learn about India’s maritime heritage.
On February 5, 2026, INS Sudarshini departed Salalah and continued her voyage to other international ports. The ongoing journey covers 22,000 nautical miles and aims to include visits to multiple countries over a period of ten months.
This voyage, known as Lokayan 26, demonstrates India’s commitment to naval training and international diplomacy. It provides Indian Navy cadets with valuable sailing experience and helps to strengthen international relations through cultural exchange.
As of 2026, there has been no official confirmation regarding INS Sudarshini’s participation in events such as Escale à Sète 2026 in France or the Sail 250 event in New York Harbor. The ship’s itinerary and participation details in these events have not been officially announced.
Overall, the visit to Salalah highlights the importance of maritime diplomacy and the role ships like INS Sudarshini play in enhancing international cooperation. The Indian Navy continues to use such voyages to build friendships, share maritime expertise, and promote understanding among nations.
