On October 26, 2025, a significant event took place in Seychelles when Vice President of India, Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan, attended the swearing-in ceremony of Dr. Patrick Herminie as the new President of Seychelles. This ceremony was held at Unity Stadium in Victoria, the capital city of Seychelles. The Vice President’s presence marked an important moment of diplomatic friendship between India and Seychelles.
The very next day, on October 27, 2025, Vice President Radhakrishnan met with President Herminie at the State House in Victoria. During their meeting, both leaders discussed ways to make their countries' partnership stronger. They talked about shared goals of peace, stability, and prosperity, especially in the Indian Ocean Region and across the wider Global South. This dialogue showed both sides' commitment to working together.
Several months later, on February 9, 2026, Vice President Radhakrishnan traveled to New Delhi to meet President Herminie. This meeting was part of ongoing efforts to review their countries' relations. The leaders discussed key areas of cooperation, noting that India and Seychelles are celebrating fifty years of establishing diplomatic relations. Both leaders agreed there was much potential to deepen their partnership.
They explored ways to boost cooperation in different sectors, including maritime security, renewable energy, healthcare, higher education, hospitality, and digital technology. These discussions indicated strong intentions to expand collaboration and work on common interests.
On the same day, President Herminie arrived in India for an official state visit at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During his visit, he was warmly received by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where a formal banquet was hosted in his honor. This event highlighted the importance both countries place on strengthening their relationship.
At the banquet, Indian and Seychelles leaders emphasized the significant potential to deepen their cooperation. President Murmu mentioned the India-Seychelles Joint Vision for Sustainability, Economic Growth, and Security through Enhanced Linkages, known as SESEL. This joint vision provides a strong framework for future collaboration focused on sustainability and development.
While the events signal a positive trend in their diplomatic relations, as of February 2026, there have been no official announcements about specific agreements or memoranda of understanding signed during President Herminie's visit. Details about the Special Economic Package announced during his visit have also not yet been confirmed officially.
Similarly, the specifics of the India-Seychelles joint vision, the contents of the banquet hosted at Rashtrapati Bhavan, and the exact topics discussed in the meetings remain confidential or are yet to be made public.
Both India and Seychelles continue to explore opportunities for cooperation, underscoring their shared interests in promoting peace, stability, sustainable growth, and security. The recent high-level visits and meetings reflect ongoing commitment to strengthening this partnership. Though many details are still to be announced, the overall tone suggests a mutual desire for increased collaboration in the coming years.
These diplomatic efforts come at a time when regional stability and cooperation are increasingly important for both nations and the wider Indian Ocean Region. The shared focus on sustainable development and security aims to benefit not only India and Seychelles but also contribute to peace and stability in the region.
