India and Malaysia have made important progress in their relationship. This has happened over the past few years through various steps, agreements, and visits by leaders. Both countries see each other as important partners. Their friendship is growing with new plans and cooperation in trade, technology, culture, and education.
In August 2024, India and Malaysia decided to raise their relationship to a new level called a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This was announced when Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim visited India. This agreement shows that both countries want to work more closely together.
Since that agreement, many positive changes have taken place. In December 2023, Malaysia introduced visa-free travel for Indian nationals. This means Indian people can visit Malaysia without needing a visa, making travel easier. Additionally, in July 2024, India extended free tourist visas to Malaysian nationals. These visas are valid until December 2026. These steps help promote tourism and strengthen people-to-people ties.
Trade between India and Malaysia has also increased a lot. In the financial year 2024-25, bilateral trade reached about 19.85 billion dollars. This shows that both countries are doing more business together than before.
Malaysia has a large Indian community. As of February 2026, about 2.9 million people of Indian origin live there. This makes Malaysia one of the countries with the largest Indian diaspora communities in the world. The Indian diaspora plays a big role in the growth and development of Malaysia.
In addition to travel and trade, discussions have focused on digital technology. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India’s digital payments platform, UPI, will soon be available in Malaysia. This will help people and businesses use digital money more easily.
The leadership of both countries is also working on a new plan called "IMPACT," which stands for India–Malaysia Partnership for Advancing Collective Transformation. This guiding principle aims to deepen cooperation and create more opportunities for everyone.
During his visit in February 2026, Prime Minister Modi addressed the Indian community in Kuala Lumpur. He spoke about their important role as a 'living bridge' connecting India and Malaysia. He also said that India’s success is Malaysia’s success, and that both countries share a deep bond based on geography and culture across the Indian Ocean.
Many new initiatives have been announced. These include the creation of the Malaysia-India Digital Council to expand cooperation in digital technology. Prime Minister Modi also pointed out the growing presence of Indian companies in Malaysia. One example is Malaysia’s first and Asia’s largest insulin manufacturing facility, which Indian companies helped establish.
Education is also a focus area. Modi announced Thiruvalluvar scholarships, meant to help Malaysian students pursue studies in India. This will increase opportunities for cultural exchange and learning.
Both countries plan to work together in new and advanced fields such as fintech, defense, artificial intelligence, and quantum technologies. These areas are seen as ways to help both nations grow in the future.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the important role of the Indian diaspora in Malaysia. They have contributed to building the country through work in plantations, railways, ports, schools, and hospitals. Their efforts help connect the two nations even more.
Overall, Prime Minister Modi highlighted that the true value of any partnership is the positive impact on ordinary people. He noted that cooperation in trade, technology, education, and culture is making life better for many individuals.
In summary, India and Malaysia are working to build a stronger relationship. New agreements, increased trade, and cultural links are helping both nations move forward. Leaders from both countries believe that their partnership will continue to grow, benefiting millions of people and shaping a brighter future.
